Wheelers help at Bromont

// August 24th, 2011 // No Comments » // Wheeler Events, WQW

A few weekends ago a small hardworking group of Wheelers road tripped to the Bromont Velodrome to do some riding on the new track surface.However the new surface is a work in progress and like anything done in cycling in this country-it is on a very tight budget.The very weather worn Atlanta Olympic velodrome has been sitting in it’s second home of Bromont for 10 harsh Canadian winters.Last year saw the Quebec Cup Piste itinerary changed because pack races on the track were deemed to risky with the holes in the track.The track has been a patch work quilt of Bondo and plywood short term repairs for a bit longer than “short term”.However The FQSC has spent money to buy over 750 4′X8′ sheets of a special outdoor plywood with a suitable laminate for riding to be screwed down by one paid  man and any volunteers he can scrape up.The track community is small compared to the road community so willing volunteers are few. The only paid worker/road rider doing this work, Luc Dionne, is developing a strong upper body from the hard lifting.
Brent Atkins along with Rick Bourgeault and Martin Deschamps lent a hand carrying cutting,glueing and screwing the final top row of boards.Joel and Jessica Atkins brought drinks and took pictures and lent positve encouragement.We now have a Membership at the track for our efforts and a feeling of pride from contributing to the health of Track Cycling in Canada.We spent the afternoon enjoying the fruits of our labours along with some other Montreal based trackies who came to train in the afternoon!
I hope the lines get painted in time for the National Championships!

2011 Mufferaw Joe Sportif – May 1st

// March 30th, 2011 // No Comments » // Group Ride, Wheeler Events, WQW

Hurray Hurray, it’s the first of May!

Time to head’er up the line, into the Pontiac, for our annual spring gallop.
Wheelers welcome all to our 130 km spring sportif.
A little gravel, a little wind, some great roads and a whole pile of fun.
Starting at Gavan’s Hotel in Quyon, QC.

Well they say Big Joe used to get real wet,
From pushing a big gear and workin’ up a sweat,
And everyone will tell you, all the way up the line,
If you’re ridin’ with the Wheelers, life’s mighty fine!

2011 Membership

// March 9th, 2011 // No Comments » // Wheeler Events, WQW

Dear Wheelers,

It’s that time of year again…nearly spring. The days are getting warmer and longer, the roads are getting drier. We hope to be riding bikes outside very soon.

And that also means it is time to get your membership forms and payment in so that you can take part in Wheelers activities. The Membership page is ready for 2011. You can get the forms you need to fill in, pay your membership by using PayPal services, and know that all is good.

It is necessary to fill in a Membership form, and a copy of the 2011 CCA/OCA insurance form. Very important. Note that even if you submit payment, your membership will not be formally accepted until we get the forms! Sorry, but we don’t make the rules around the insurance issue.

So please take the time to fill in your paperwork. Once it is done you can give them to one of the club Board members, or scan them back and email them to wqwheelers@gmail.com.

Thank you very much for your help with this important issue.

Wheelers ride the planks

// January 7th, 2011 // 4 Comments » // Wheeler Events

*** Update *** : we are pleased to announce that registration for this event is now closed.  All available slots have now been accounted for.  Bring on the planks!

Road trip!

Join the Wheelers in February as we head to the Forest City
Velodrome
in London, Ont., for a weekend of track riding.

Dates

February 11, 12, and 13,  2011

Details

For just $60 ($50 without bike rental) you will be treated to a two-hour introduction to track riding session (what they call “Track 1”),  followed by a one-hour skills clinic on Saturday Feb. 12, and be able to hone your track-riding skills at the drop-in riding session on Sunday, Feb. 13. Track bike rental is included in this fee.

As a bonus, we’ll be able to take in the action at the track races on
Saturday evening. Rumour has it that some Wheelers and friends are even
threatening to compete!

A maximum of 14 to 16 riders can participate in the Track 1 session (16
if a few already have some track experience).  Participation will be on
a First PAID, first served basis.

Payment

Payment will be accepted by PayPal (see below)

What to bring

  • Cycling shoes and gloves, helmet, pedals.
  • Warm cycling clothes. Note that the London track, while covered, is not heated. Be prepared to wear tights and maybe even shoe covers.
  • Bring warm clothes for standing around in as well.
  • If you opt to bring your own bike, you will pay $10 less.  However, you must make sure that your tires are soft—not hardened by trainers or rollers or from being out in the sun.
  • A word of advice about bringing a track bike: a road fixie may not be allowed on the track due to bottom bracket height issues. If in doubt about the bike you own or are borrowing from a friend, we suggest renting a bike for $10.

Transportation

We will sort out carpooling to London, leaving on Friday, Feb. 11,
returning Sunday, Feb. 13, in the evening. ForestCity Velodrome is 626 km from Ottawa (about 7 hours with no stops). Detailed address.

VIVA LA REVOLUCION! Roller Race Dec 30 – Volunteers needed

// December 10th, 2010 // 4 Comments » // Echelon Project, Roller Racing, Wheeler Events

We are back at the Elmdale Tavern for our Roller Races this season. Our first night is December 30, a Thursday. This race is not only a fundraiser for the club and Echelon Project but also an event supporting Bikes for Cuba.

If you have old bikes, parts, clothing, shoes and helmets that you don’t need anymore, bring them along. People in Cuba make between $10. and $25. a month. I went to Havana with my family a few years ago and we and met a 16 year old girl who was the Cuban Junior Triathlon champ. She was riding a beat up old mid-level steel Miele with a broken rear brake cable and missing spokes. She said there were no brake cables or right length spokes available in any of the bike shops. Even if there were, she could not afford them.

We will need volunteers for the evening. Please contact me if you can fulfill one or more of the following duties:

  • Someone to create sign-on sheets
  • People to transport rollers from Aylmer
  • Someone to transport clock from Aylmer
  • Two Doormen
  • 2 people-Registration for races
  • 1 person to take care of door prize pile and make note of donations for thank-you purposes after
  • Two people to sell raffle prize tickets

SETUP – need a gang for:

  • Table and chairs setup
  • Hang Banner if applicable
  • Hang Arrows for each bike
  • Set up Clock
  • Rollers adjustment repair if needed
  • Ensure rollers are in working order and calibrated one week prior to races and repair if needed.
  • 2 people needed to switch setup from fixed and free roller races and sometimes back again.

If you are not familiar with Roller Racing, we have videos and pictures from our previous editions of the event.
